GTA 6 Northern Leonida and the Real Florida Places That Inspired It

GTA 6’s Northern Leonida is inspired from Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and the small towns between them, according to Rockstar’s Paul MacPherson. He also describes presence of “BlackRock- and boneyard-inspired beaches” in the game.

The real BlackRock and Boneyard are side by side on Big Talbot Island near Jacksonville. However, Rockstar hasn’t named the island or said that the upcoming title copies it.

MacPherson, senior vice president of environmental art at Rockstar, told Game Informer that the team studied those cities and towns in detail.

He further cited the deforestation zones and lumber industries as brilliant spaces with gameplay potential. Also added that the team found the gated communities developed around private jet ownership, with personal landing strips, and struggling towns on the west coast fit the GTA 6 story.

Between the GTA 6 Northern Leonida towns, he describes ATV trails, a mud park party for every vehicle type, and destruction derby races on floodlit oval tracks at night.

Further adds that there are mountain bike trails, farms, ranches and a luxury private golf course. The list further adds motocross on coastal dunes and bass fishing on a lake ringed with Spanish moss, live oaks and cypress.

For a real-world context, Big Talbot Island State Park’s Boneyard Beach is covered with skeletons of live oak and cedar trees beneath a 20-foot bluff. The neighbouring BlackRock beach has black rock formations of compressed leaves and sand.

The names used by MacPherson during his interview with Game Informer do match the real-world beaches of Jacksonville, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed the link.

Ocala fits the ranch side. Marion County is truly the horse capital of the world, with more horses and ponies than any other county in the US.

Mount Kalaga anchors the region of the northern border as a national park. Stewart from Game Informer writes that it presents the culture of the Florida-Georgia line, which the game calls the Leonida-Gloriana line.
