GTA 6 Barely Makes Awards Season: What It Can Still Win

The GTA 6 Game of the Year 2026 sweep looks tough this season across all five major award shows. The title releases on November 19, eight days after the Golden Joystick Awards decide their winners. But it does qualify for the BAFTA Games Awards on the very last day of the window, and the deadline for the Game Awards has not been published yet. D.I.C.E. and the Game Developers Choice Awards will take place in 2027, eventually making the game eligible for both.

Why the sweep is not possible

Rockstar’s upcoming title follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos’ characters through Vice City and the new state of Leonida. The title is set to launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the date collides with the awards calendar.

The voting for the 44th Joystick Awards will close on October 23, and the Awards show will take place in London on November 11, 2026.

And as per GamesRadar, Ultimate Game of the Year voting runs across October 26 and 30, and a game that isn’t released yet can’t win it.

Only two titles in history have won all five major GOTY prizes: Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and the record stays with them this year too.

The Game Awards looks eligible on paper, but unconfirmed in reality.

Geoff Keighley’s award show will stream on December 10 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. As per TGA’s official website, eligibility dates arrive in fall 2026, with no date confirmed yet.

Last year, the cutoff date was November 21, and following the third-Friday pattern, this year’s cutoff may fall on November 20.

As per Polymarket, GTA 6 has a 68% chance of winning the top prize. So the GTA 6 Game of the Year sweep depends on multiple factors, with fewer real chances due to its delayed launch date.

GTA 6 BAFTA inclusion on the Final Day

The official eligibility window for the BAFTA Games Awards 2027 is 15 November 2025 – 19 November 2026, and GTA VI becomes eligible on the last day.

On the other hand, the Game Developers Choice Awards will go live on March 2, 2027, from the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. The submissions for the Awards will end on November 1, but GTA 6 GDCA eligibility will work under its “unreleased but releasing before year-end” clause.

Why The Game Of The Year Sweep Wasn’t Guaranteed for GTA 6

Titles under Rockstar Games have a good record but are uneven across years; the following are the titles that won awards across shows over the years:

• GTA IV (2008): Won Game of the Year at the Spike VGAs and Xbox Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks but didn’t win anything at the BAFTAs despite being in the top nominations.
• Red Dead Redemption (2010): Received the Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards, along with awards for audio, design, and technology.
