Firstly, Nelson steals a car from the police impound lot. A car fence had given the details about the lot and its code to the pair. As he sees the car, he says, “Now that looks like an Infernus to me…”

The car comes with an advanced tracker system; Nelson says the police will know where it is “if I’m not driving it at a great enough speed.” He adds, “If I drive slow, it pings, and the police will know where I am. So you have to drive the car fast.”

He also says there is an option for you to repair the car before selling the stolen car to someone else, “because the car fence will give you less money for it if it’s damaged.”

Things didn’t work out well later, after a robbery, as the cops covered the area, and Nelson was caught. “I was just being a total idiot,” he said. “I should have just yelled at Lucia to take off, and that would’ve taken some heat off.” IGN mentions that the demo “wasn’t a prescribed demo, and often things didn’t work out as planned.”

How the wanted system works, per Nelson

Nelson, along with the commentary, explained several rules while playing, which are

  • Witnesses or Alarms: “The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.”
  • Outfits: “If I have heat, purchasing and wearing a new outfit will remove any heat that I have.” He mentioned changing isn’t enough because police still know your identity.
  • Splitting up: Separating the protagonists Jason and Lucia “will also help lower the police’s perception of you.”
  • On foot at three stars: Running away by car “can sometimes be challenging” at three stars. Nelson’s advice for you is to “get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.”
  • Getting busted: “If either of you gets arrested, it’s just ‘busted,’ then it’s a restart, a respawn. As with previous games.”
  • Focus mode: Nelson described the mode as “very similar to ‘Eagle Eye'” in Red Dead Redemption 2. In the demo gameplay, it made the closer cops glow.
  • Rockstar had already mentioned some of these systems, including car theft tools and police remembering outfits, while other points are something new from the IGN interview.

What Rob Nelson said in the GTA 6 interview about Mission Freedom

Nelson addressed the topic of balance between freedom and storytelling, saying, “We are always trying to find that balance,” in the interview. He added, “The narrative aspect does need to take precedence at times… but with this game we have made a very conscious effort to open things up where possible, without compromising the quality of the experience.”

He then pointed towards the tower-block mission from the Netflix video, which, according to him, has multiple exits. During the Raul mission, he said, There is an advised route for you to follow, but if you don’t follow it, you can still get out.”

In the interview with IGN, he mentioned one limit in the gameplay by saying, “It can sometimes be hard to keep the quality as high if you allow for too much freedom or too much choice on missions.”

Other details from the GTA 6 Rob Nelson interview

  • Choice: When asked about whether choice was a guiding idea, Nelson stated that it was “a big thing on the proverbial whiteboard.”
  • Exploring over rushing: “You get the most out of the narrative if you put time into the game and just get lost in the world, not necessarily by chasing from mission to mission.”
  • Team size: He said the density of GTA 6’s world is the reason why Rockstar’s team “has doubled in size.”
  • A small slice: “You’ve only seen a tiny, tiny slice of it in the city. I didn’t even get to the beach.”
